This week, a Chinese AI startup called Moonshot AI released a model called Kimi K3 — and it just took the top spot for frontend coding in independent tests, beating every major paid AI tool. The full model will be free to download later this month. That matters a lot if your team is currently paying an AI company for coding help.
Most powerful AI tools are services you pay for by the query — like a taxi. Kimi K3 is different: Moonshot is releasing the model's full design to the public. Any developer can download it, run it on their own servers, and pay nothing per use. This way of sharing — called 'open-weight' — means a free copy of a top-ranked coding AI will exist in just over a week.
The benchmark numbers are real. On the Frontend Code Arena — a widely-used test where developers vote on which AI writes better code — Kimi K3 scored 1,679 points, beating Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 (1,631) and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol (1,618). The API price is also lower: $15 per million tokens (the small chunks of text an AI reads and writes) versus around $50 for Anthropic's flagship. Anthropic's CEO said he hadn't expected a Chinese lab to close this gap for another six months. When the news hit on Thursday, Nvidia's stock fell and the Nasdaq 100 slipped 1% — a market shock similar to the one China's DeepSeek caused at the start of last year.
For builders and business owners, the message is simple: the cost of top-level AI coding help is falling fast, and soon a genuinely free option will rival the best paid tools. Running your own model takes some setup — you need servers and some engineering work. But if you are paying per token for AI coding today, July 27 is worth marking in your calendar as the day to test whether you still need to keep paying.
