The €3 Billion Bet That Every Business Will Want AI It Actually Controls

Mistral just raised €3 billion for AI that companies can fully control — a sign that 'sovereign AI' is becoming the norm, not a luxury.

Mistral, a three-year-old French AI company, just raised €3 billion — the largest equity round a European tech company has ever closed. Samsung led the deal. BlackRock and the government of Luxembourg joined in. The post-money valuation is over €21 billion. This is not a niche idea getting some attention. Sovereign AI just went mainstream.

Sovereign AI sounds like a political term, but the idea is simple: AI your company actually controls. Your data stays inside your own walls. The model runs on your servers, or one you choose and trust. You can check every decision it makes and swap it out whenever you want. Most AI tools today do not work like that — your data travels to someone else's servers and gets processed by a model you cannot inspect. For banks, law firms, hospitals, and governments, that is a growing compliance problem.

Europe has felt this most sharply. Building with US-based AI tools means navigating strict data laws and cross-border data flows. Mistral's pitch is that you do not have to. It builds open-weight models — models where anyone can see, run, and change the actual code — and deploys them inside Europe. The new funding will scale that further: Mistral wants 1 gigawatt of European computing power by 2030. The goal is powerful AI you can fully control.

It matters that Samsung — a global hardware giant, not a European fund — led this round. French President Macron called it a 'third way in AI,' something that is neither purely American nor Chinese. If your clients ever ask 'where does our data go?' — and more and more do — that question only gets harder to dodge.
